| An independent commission for redistricting is the only way to go forward and provide fair elections that do not favor either party based on who is in power. The GOP took control of the State legislature in 2011 and have passed laws that gerrymandered districts both racially and in a partisan manner. The NC GOP has wasted at least $20 million in taxpayer funds in defending these unconstitutional laws. They have lost at least 14 times and keep on appealing and so the illegal maps are used again and again to keep them in power. This is immoral. | |||

Businesses are not going to pay for greenhouse gases or other toxins that they release into our environment. We must make them to this to save our planet. In NC, Duke Energy is a good example. The GOP has allowed them to charge customers $10 million to clean up the toxic waste that pollutes are water and earth. I want to change that. | |||

| Military-style weapons have no place in civilian life. The 2nd amendment called for a "well-regulated" militia. Certainly the writers of the Bil of Rights envisioned the need to regulate how and why guns are owned and used in our society. The number of deaths caused by guns in suicides, domestic violence and mass shootings must be reduced. More guns will not make us more safe. | |||

| Expanding Medicaid in NC is the first step that we must take. It is illegal to do so now since the GOP rejected anything related to the Affordable Care Act. In fact, the majority of citizens support Medicare for all. Since health care is a human right, it should not be reserved for only those with the money to pay for it. Working people should not have to choose between healthcare and bankruptcy. | |||

| Healthcare is a high priority. We need to expand medicare and set up NC insurance exchanges under the ACA. That is the first step to getting health care costs under control. The funding is in place and taxpayers have been paying since the ACA was enacted. We need to bring that money home. Education is also a priority. The funding is also available if we stop tax breaks to the wealthy corporations. Governor Cooper's 2017 budget funded pre-K though HS across the state without tax increases to individuals. The next step is to stop funding private schools with vouchers. |
